The idea behind setting up a small business website is to have a platform on which you can serve information about your company to interesting visitors. But this is not enough. It is also advisable to optimize your site, so that it will show up in prominent places in the search engine results pages (SERPs) each time a potential buyer searches for your product or service. At the end of the day, you have to show up to be found. In order to increase the chances of your website showing up on top of the SERPs, consider the following top three tips when you think about the web design for small business:
Tip No. 1: Content is first. Offering a lot of content increases chances of having visitors come to your website to look for—and find—information. But launching a website with layers and layers of information is not enough. You also need to keep your website updated with fresh content regularly in order to sustain traffic. Ideally, you should have about ten to thirty pages of fresh content every month, either within your website or other websites that link back to you.
Tip No. 2: Add keywords to your content. This is how SEO works in relation to keywords. First, you decide on which keywords to use. Put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer. Try to think about the keyword that you, as a potential customer, will use if you want to search for a product or service in your industry. Take note of these keywords and use them in your content. Pepper your content with these keywords but be careful not to make it sound illogical. This is a popular way of increasing your chances of showing up prominently in SERPs.
Tip No. 3: Don’t do blackhatting. Blackhatting refers to unethical practices designed to influence search engines such as keyword spamming, hidden pages and the like. They may build your traffic to unbelievable spikes, but they won’t be able to sustain it. Worse, they also expose your website to the possibility of being banned by the search engines when you are found out.
